I stumbled upon this quote while scrolling through my Pinterest page as I have done many times before. I’d find quotes to lift my spirit for the day, find motivation, or quotes I could discuss with my clients. The quote showed above sparked an entire series I decided to do on a weekly basis with a group I run during the week. We discuss our weekends, good points, bad points, what we are grateful for and how we choose to feel today. Yes, choose, it is a choice.
Now sometimes our mood is instantly negative when we wake up in the morning. We didn’t get enough sleep, we don’t enjoy our job, or, it’s just not a day we are looking forward to. Usually when we wake up feeling not so great, it’s because our first thought in the morning (this happens without us even noticing) is, you guessed it, a negative one. Of course, were ruling out any medical conditions, lack of sleep due to children, bad weather, etc.
Sometimes it’s just the opposite. We wake up, the sun is shining, coffee is already brewing and the kids are behaving. Again, when we wake up in a good mood it’s usually because our first thought is a positive one!
Typically we don’t pay attention to the days where we feel good, it’s the bad moods (days) that we struggle with. Did you know you were in control of your mood? Did you know that there’s a choice?
It’s our choice to continuously run the fight we had with our loved ones in our head like a movie. It’s our choice to let that movie set the tone for the rest of the day.
If you don’t feel like being happy that’s fine, I don’t expect or ask my clients, or anyone, to choose positivity 24/7 thats not realistic. If you feel tired, sad, frustrated, anxious, thats okay. You are allowed to feel that. You have the power and control over your feelings, no one else.
How amazing is that? We can choose what we want to feel. If you want to feel frustrated because you have a to-do list that requires a 30-hour day thats okay. By acknowledging that it is your choice to feel frustrated we regain the power over our emotions. Acknowledge what you’re feeling is frustration and then decide if it the mood you want to stick with for a few minutes or the entire day. Once you acknowledge and accept that your mood is your choice, you feel an impressive power and freedom.
So how do you choose to feel today?
